Rainer Poiss is the head of the research and development department and member of the five-person executive team at asma GmbH plastics technology PUR in Weitra. In 2019, he was honoured for 25 years at the company.

Mr. Poiss, which aspects shaped you as a person from your first day at work up to you being a process manager? My professional career started in Vienna at Philips, where I did an apprenticeship to become a toolmaker and mechatronics engineer. A very professional company. However, the big city and I did not match. Besides, the electronics company´s production location was not secured. After a discussion with Maximilian Aspelmayr in 1994, I started to work as a lathe operator at asma in Wultschau. The material polyurethane is very fascinating and interesting in its processing and use. I accepted the challenge and after several specialist trainings, I took over the quality management (ISO 9001) and development little by little. Together with my colleague DI Zvetanka Nestorova (chemist), we started to build up an in-house R&D department in 2001.

Among your colleagues at asma, expertise and Rainer Poiss are inseparable. What is the secret recipe? In the first place, it is interest in and curiosity for the matter as well as reading specialist journals and books and extensive research on the material! The basic research on the specific behaviour of polyurethane elastomers is an almost inexhaustible subject. The material PUR possesses an incredibly exciting range of characteristics. In close cooperation with our customers and raw material suppliers, but most importantly in our own laboratory, we are constantly searching for new solutions. It is also a constant process of learning, where you encounter limitations. With every success or failure, more know-how is acquired.

What are your goals? To find new, interesting products, tackle challenges and optimally use the special features of polyurethane in order to meet the customer requests, which can be very special.

Do you have a motto? Yes, “Strength lies in calmness, success in perseverance“

It is also a constant process of learning, where you encounter limitations. With every success or failure, more know-how is acquired.„. Rainer Poiss
